Novara is a delightful town, a sort of nineteenth century salon, dominated by the bell tower of San Gaudenzio, unmistakably the work of the architect Antonelli and surrounded by moraine hills.
This is first of all a land of art. It is easy to encounter exhibitions in the
heart of the city, or to lose oneself while exploring the surrounding
countryside, rich with traditions and pastoral charm. It is pleasurable to
wander through the fields, the farmhouses, the tree plantations, the rivers
and streams, exploring the land of the rice weeders and the herons,
returning at the end of the day to the city.
Novara has two faces: that of a historical city centre rich with artistic
wonders and the discrete allure of the gravelled roads between the
vineyards and the rice paddies. It is agreeable to wander amongst the
Roman walls, the Broletto (the medieval municipal assembly place), the
Civic Museums, the Cathedral and the Baptistery, discovering the sacred
paintings from the sixth century and Antonelli’s architecture, finally
reaching the quiet of the countryside.
Visitors can organise their personal itinerary for discovering an elegant
city and life in the farmhouses nestling amongst villages, churches
and abbeys.
